Black is usually perceived as a fairly dramatic colour – but Emilie Otté Architects casually sweep that notion out the door of this Kortrijk-based home in Belgium.

Their take? Black is the new neutral.

They go on to prove how using a darker wood can perfectly balance all the other elements in play while still adding that glamorous touch.

From the kitchen to the living room to the built-in study, Decospan’s custom Yaya Nero veneer is present in all facets of the residence. The straight, uniform lines of the wood grain – due to the quarter cut slicing technique – give the interior a sleek, clean appearance.

The dark wood is an eye-catcher in its own simple, understated manner, bringing an element of richness and luxury to the final look.

Different textures and colours are brought together to create winning combos: wood and stone materials, soft and rougher fabrics, light and dark colours.

The use of the bold, black wood is offset with a warm, brown wooden floor. Yet these dark colours do not make it a heavy interior – cool greys and whites on the walls paired with gauzy curtains make the house feel light and airy.

The leathers and suedes of the slightly masculine furniture are paired with rounded ornaments and feminine touches.

A playful touch is added to the interior with the use of slats around the kitchen and home office: a smart way to separate the space without removing the light or diminishing the spacious interior.

The beauty of this residence lies in the difficulty of achieving balance between the different elements. But Emilie Otté pulls it off with ease.

The feeling of serenity in a beautifully decorated interior is not to be underestimated: this home could easily become a favourite place of many.
