Good company, an attractive setting, and a passion for wood; all the ingredients for a special autumn day a few weeks ago. An enthusiastic group of interior design experts was brought together in the wooded grounds of a chateau near Brugge. The leitmotif for the whole day was wood, responsible forest management and craftsmanship.
Not just veneer
Taken away from their stylish interiors and clothed in Decospan overalls, a group of architects went on a journey of discovery to the origins of wood veneer. After an introduction to the rich history of the park, we headed ‘back to the roots’, into the woods.
We were drawn into the tale of responsible forest management: from selecting the right trees to recognising the wood types suitable for veneer. The saplings that would eventually become veneer are marked with a blue dot.
Building for the future
We learnt that wood veneer is not only the best choice for aesthetics, but also for sustainability. You can only get 23 m² of solid wood from a single cubic metre, whereas veneer allows you to obtain between 700 and 1000 m². And without compromising on quality.
The day was rounded off with an amiable dinner beneath the trees. Each participant received an oak sapling to plant, a symbol of our dedication to a sustainable future.
